Started this entry by writing several words I felt would be in the description of what makes my creative DNA: Style, Emotion, Advocacy, Pain, Reflection, Humanity, History and Knowledge.
Style- I don't like to put my styles in a box or name them but you can catch them reflected in TEN different Complete and Open Series of Art. The strongest consistency is found in movement of strokes and how the paint is applied.
Emotion- I am empathic to how you would explain natural connections to this planet, people of all Nations, Ancestral to Social and Political.
Advocacy- personally I use my art to raise awareness, funding or motivation in the realm of Ending Epilepsy, Education and Mental Health, outside of helping countless organizations or nonprofits achieve the goals with artwork, mentoring and speaking engagements. Helping create visual to vocal support to causes greater than my personal creations.
Pain- Creation has become my greatest form of rehabilitation. After being told by a brain surgeon, that I wouldn't be able to create/paint anymore.
Reflection of life- I have created an Army of paintings dating back more than a decade that has become timeless within subject-matter relevant to the issues of today.
Filter for Humanity- My Mission Statement from day one read "promote positive change in humanity through the arts" shortly after beginning the company, I've learned how challenging promoting positivity can be.
Personal Journal- I keep track of personal things in multiple of series, showing the amount of seizures I had during the creation of a piece, to date of my Mother's Second Battle with Breast cancer.
Untold History- I enjoy hiding little jewels of knowlege in majority of the work I create. All of the knowledge in me didn't come from man nor book. My depth into my cultures history reflects in the art.
Knowlege Learned- quotes and lessons learned carved into the painting itself or name of the creation. Painting allows me to express 10x as much as I could with diction. Having dual degrees from the Streets of Baltimore to the brick side walks of Penn State has made me extremely well rounded.
The challenge is to truly be original on a planet, where there is nothing new under the sun. The style, layering, collaboration, color or lack there of, each creation tells a story or captures movement in a way unique to the creative journey of Matthew Rice aka Mateo Blu
Definition of "Mateo Blu"
Mateo- Gift of God
I am beyond blessed to creatively be a conduit, during the creative process I know exactly what I want to do, how much paint I want to apply, the amount of layering from priming the canvas to finishing with my signature.
I live my Art, with a life given to learn, observe, build self, give Glory to my creator, and live out my purpose till I am no longer needed in this dimension we call Earth. The Life of a True Artist isn't for the average creative person. If you are thinking about getting into the game for the money, look else where. One of the hardest creative commandments to learn is that most Artists don't experience their worth. The Art itself receives more attention once its creator transitions from this world. I personally accept that this could be my destiny as I use it for motivation to enjoy the journey as much as the destination.
The Dedication- late nights early mornings, you don't bring your work home with you, you are the work. Prepare for Disappointment- talent and drive doesn't guarantee your destination but Consistency can help with your direction. Your Vision must remain true, remember the reasons you got into the creative game. Art is, was, and will always be greater than you, your Energy both mentally & physically from creating, can be as demanding as a single parent of 7, Building Marketing, Research PR., creative medium, material cost, Unstable Economy that effects Sales.
Everything that makes me who I am, the essence of my soul is layered into my work. There's levels within the creation process that's greater than my own understanding.
In the middle of that mental structure, I abstractly Zone out.... Allowing raw emotion, music or the combination of all the above to produce art deeper than the canvas that embodies it.
If It wasn't for my creative outlet I would be a problem... (as I think to myself) I would not fit into today's society. Painting above all other forms of Art has helped me balance a positive mind frame.
A platform to give back to humanity in ways money never could. The dedication I once had for athletics, and teammates has fully converted to Art. The lanes of Art continue to expand as I continue to improve on the layers of self, treating my self like my greatest master piece. There is always something to appreciate and improve in ones self.
